Mini silver appleyard ducks
a.k.a. the silver bantam
What is today known as a “Miniature Silver Appleyard” in the USA was originally called a “Silver Appleyard Bantam” in the 1940s, and is now actually just called a “Silver Bantam” in the UK, and with good reason. There exists an “Appleyard Duck” in standard size, created by Reginald Appleyard in the UK. He then went on to create these beauties… but these are not just miniature versions of the appleyard ducks as the name may suggest. Those were eventually created by Tom Bartlett in the UK in the 1980s, and aptly then named “Miniature Silver Appleyards”. Stay with me here…
Silver Bantams (as they are known in the UK, and as we will refer to them here for clarity) more closely resemble Abacot Ranger standard ducks, but in miniature. These ducks are the miniature breed Reginald Appleyard worked so hard on, and deserve to be recognized - name confusion aside! They have beautiful markings, and we are very lucky to be able to add them to our growing list of rare and conservation breeds.
